A Life of Zukile
Today, we honour and celebrate the life of our beloved brother, Zukile Pityi, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, father-in-law, public servant, accomplished agricultural and rural development leader, mentor, and champion of the advancement of rural communities. His passing has left an immense void in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues and all those whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.
Zukile was a man of substance, conviction and purpose. He dedicated much of his life to public service, driven by a deep commitment to agricultural development, land reform, farmer empowerment and the economic advancement of rural communities. His life's work reflected his belief that land, when supported by appropriate resources, knowledge and opportunity, could transform livelihoods, restore dignity and create sustainable economic participation.
To those who knew and loved him, he was far more than the distinguished professional whose career spanned decades of public service. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather beloved brother, uncle, father in-law and a source of strength to his family, a trusted colleague, a mentor to younger professionals and a leader who believed in the potential of others.
Academic Foundation and Professional Journey
Zukile's professional journey was built on a strong academic foundation and a lifelong commitment to learning.
He studied at the University of Fort Hare, obtaining a Bachelor of Agriculture with a focus on Land Use Planning, Agricultural Extension and Applied Land Use, followed by a Bachelor of Agriculture Honours in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development.
He subsequently obtained a Master's degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the University of the Orange Free State, now the University of the Free State. His pursuit of knowledge also took him to Israel for intensive training in land-use planning and agricultural extension, broadening his understanding of agricultural development and international approaches to supporting farmers.
His academic grounding, combined with his practical experience and strategic insight, equipped him to make a meaningful contribution to agricultural policy, land administration, rural development and the transformation of the Eastern Cape's agricultural sector.
A Distinguished Career in Public Service
Zukile began his career in the Eastern Cape public service in the late 1980s, working in land-use planning and agricultural development. In these early years, he was involved in resettlement planning, land-use assessments, agricultural feasibility studies and the preparation of plans to support displaced communities, farm dwellers and rural settlements.
As his career progressed, he assumed increasingly senior responsibilities within provincial government.
His roles encompassed agricultural advisory services, land administration, policy implementation, regional management, projects and planning, and the coordination of agricultural and rural development programmes.
He served as a senior and principal agricultural adviser before progressing into management and executive leadership positions. His responsibilities included overseeing agricultural programmes across districts, managing budgets and resources, supporting land administration and redistribution processes, and coordinating initiatives aimed at strengthening agricultural production and rural livelihoods.
By the early 2000s, Zukile had advanced into senior management and director-level positions. He later served as General Manager for Agricultural and Rural Development in the Eastern Cape, where he contributed to farmer support programmes, agricultural infrastructure development, food security initiatives, district development planning and provincial agricultural strategy.
His career subsequently extended into land restitution and land reform, where he played a role in supporting the resolution and implementation of land claims and addressing land-related matters affecting communities. He later held senior provincial leadership responsibilities, including in the Provincial Shared Service Centre.
Throughout these roles, Zukile brought institutional knowledge, strategic perspective and a practical understanding of the challenges confronting rural communities. He understood that meaningful transformation required sound policy, but also the resources, partnerships and determined implementation necessary to turn policy into tangible results.
Achievements and Contributions to Agricultural Development
Zukile's legacy is particularly evident in the practical initiatives he supported to empower farmers, strengthen agricultural production and improve the livelihoods of rural communities. His work was not confined to boardrooms, government offices or policy documents. He believed in engaging directly with farmers, understanding their circumstances and helping them access the resources required to make their land productive.
Among his notable achievements and contributions were the following:
1. Grain production and farmer empowerment in Matatiele
Zukile visited farmers in Matatiele who had approximately 10,000 hectares of arable land with the potential for grain production. Recognising the opportunity to unlock this potential, he assisted the Eastern Cape provincial farmers in securing funding for ploughing and planting.
Although prevailing rainfall conditions limited the area that could be cultivated, the farmers successfully planted 3,400 hectares of grain. Their achievement saw them rank number one among South Africa's nine provinces in the relevant agricultural initiative.
This was a powerful demonstration of what could be achieved through effective resource mobilisation, practical support and the commitment of farmers. It also reflected Zukile's ability to connect agricultural potential with the interventions needed to translate it into measurable results.
2. Empowering a female farmer through livestock support
Zukile contributed to an initiative that culminated in the handover of 800 sheep to a female farmer. This intervention represented more than the provision of livestock; it offered an opportunity to strengthen her farming enterprise, build productive capacity and create a foundation for sustainable economic participation.
The initiative reflected his commitment to supporting farmers and expanding opportunities for women in agriculture.
3. Comprehensive support to strengthen an individual farming enterprise
In another significant intervention, a farmer received 134 cattle, including six bulls, together with a tractor, a van and farm fencing.
This comprehensive package of support was aimed at strengthening the farmer's productive capacity and creating the conditions for a more sustainable farming operation. It illustrated Zukile's appreciation that successful agricultural development requires an integrated approach, combining livestock, equipment, infrastructure and access to productive resources.
4. School and community gardening initiatives
Zukile also supported the handover of gardening implements, including wheelbarrows, to schools and communities in Peddie and Fort Beaufort. These initiatives encouraged community participation in food production and promoted the values of self-reliance, practical learning and food security.
By supporting schools and communities, he helped advance the idea that agriculture could play an important role in strengthening households and nurturing a culture of productive engagement with the land.
5. Support for soybean farming
His contribution also extended to soybean farming, supporting efforts to diversify agricultural production and expand opportunities for farmers. His interest in different agricultural commodities reflected a broader understanding of the importance of building a resilient and productive agricultural sector.
Taken together, these initiatives demonstrate the breadth of Zukile's contribution. He understood that agricultural development had to move beyond plans and promises to deliver practical interventions that enabled farmers to cultivate land, acquire productive assets, increase output and improve their livelihoods.
Strategic Contributions to Rural Development
Beyond individual farming initiatives, Zukile made important contributions to the institutional and strategic development of agriculture and rural development in the Eastern Cape.
He was involved in efforts to strengthen the province's agricultural infrastructure, including initiatives aimed at revitalising irrigation schemes and improving agricultural production in historically disadvantaged areas.
His work contributed to broader efforts to restore the productive capacity of rural land and create opportunities for farmers and surrounding communities.
In 2007, he contributed to the transformation of the Eastern Cape Rural Finance Corporation from an agricultural bank into a development finance and project implementation agency supporting the provincial Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform. This work reflected his understanding that access to appropriate finance and institutional support was essential to unlocking agricultural and rural development opportunities.
In 2008, he was part of the team that formulated the Eastern Cape Agrarian Transformation Strategy, an important contribution to the province's approach to agricultural transformation and rural development.
In 2009, he was appointed to a national committee tasked with formulating the National Mentorship Implementation Framework. This appointment recognised the value of his experience and his contribution to developing approaches that could support farmers through mentorship and knowledge transfer.
His leadership also extended to governance and oversight. He served as Chairperson of the Board of Governors of Fort Cox College, contributing to agricultural education and institutional development. He also served on the boards of the Ntanga Development Agency, the Eastern Cape Rural Finance Corporation and Kangela Citrus.
These responsibilities reflected the confidence placed in his judgement and leadership, as well as the breadth of his contribution across agriculture, rural finance, education and enterprise development.
A Leader Who Believed in People
While Zukile's professional achievements were significant, his impact on people was equally profound.
He believed in the potential of younger professionals and was willing to give them opportunities to grow, learn and demonstrate their capabilities. He understood that leadership was not simply about authority or position, but about recognising talent, building confidence and creating opportunities for others to succeed.
A heartfelt tribute by a former colleague, Lubabalo Mankazana Makapela, captures this dimension of Zukile's character. Affectionately known as “Bra Zuks,” “uZikhali Mazembe" and “uJojo,” he was remembered as a senior leader whose example inspired younger officials in the provincial Department of Agriculture.
Makapela recalled how Zukile and other senior leaders helped shape and inspire young professionals, many of whom were products of the University of Fort Hare. Zukile's willingness to encourage and support those coming through the ranks left a lasting impression.
During a later period in their professional journeys, when they crossed paths in land reform and restitution work, Zukile continued to demonstrate his belief in the abilities of others. He encouraged colleagues to step forward, take responsibility and embrace opportunities for advancement. He stood by them through difficult periods, offering reassurance and affirming their capacity to lead.
One of the messages remembered from him was: “Mfo kaMakapela, this is your time to take over. Mpehle trusted you.”
These words capture the essence of his mentorship: the ability to recognise when someone was ready, to encourage them to step into their potential and to offer support when it mattered most.
Zukile was remembered as a fearless, action-oriented leader who did not believe in waiting for change to happen. He believed in taking initiative, challenging the status quo and making things happen. His influence will therefore live on not only in the programmes he supported, but also in the people he mentored and the leaders he helped shape.
A Distinctive Personality
Beyond his professional stature, Zukile had a personality and presence that people remembered with affection.
He was affectionately associated with his Fedora hat, a distinctive part of his personal style. These details offer a glimpse of the man behind the titles: someone with his own flair, character and unmistakable presence.
Such memories remind us that a life is made up not only of professional milestones and public achievements, but also of the individual qualities, habits and moments that make a person uniquely memorable to those around him.
A Vision That Continued Beyond Retirement
Even after retiring from formal public service, Zukile's commitment to rural development remained undiminished.
Together with his partners, he continued pursuing rural development opportunities in Gqeberha, Port St John's, East London and Gauteng. His continued involvement reflected a belief that experience, relationships and entrepreneurial initiative could still be harnessed to create meaningful opportunities for communities.
Retirement did not mark the end of his ambitions or his desire to contribute. Rather, it represented another chapter in which he sought to apply the knowledge, networks and experience accumulated over decades to new development opportunities.
This continued commitment speaks to the depth of his passion. Rural development was not merely his profession; it was a cause to which he remained devoted.
His Legacy
Zukile Pityi leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, empowerment and practical action.
His contribution can be seen in the farmers who received support, the land brought into production, the livestock and equipment placed in farmers' hands, the schools and communities equipped to grow food, and the institutions and strategies he helped strengthen.
His professional journey also stands as a testament to the value of education, perseverance and a commitment to public service. From his early work in land-use planning to senior leadership in agricultural development and land reform, he devoted his knowledge and experience to improving the conditions of rural communities.
Perhaps just as importantly, he leaves a legacy in the people he encouraged, mentored and inspired. The professionals who benefited from his guidance carry forward a part of his contribution, just as the communities touched by his work carry the enduring value of the opportunities he helped create.
For his family, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, cherished brother, uncle, father-in-law and an important part of the family's story. His passing brings profound sadness, and words cannot fully express the pain of losing someone whose presence, experience and place in the family cannot simply be replaced. Yet, in spite of the grief, there is comfort in knowing that his life was one of purpose and that his contribution extended far beyond himself.
We remember Zukile not only for the positions he held or the responsibilities entrusted to him, but for what he stood for: service, action, empowerment and the belief that people and communities could flourish when given the right support and opportunities.
His journey has ended, but the impact of his life continues in the people he touched, the work he championed and the opportunities he helped bring to fruition.
Those He Leaves Behind
Zukile is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Nqandeka Pityi (née Nyikana); his children, Lindile,Loyiso, Zukiswa, Makabongwe and Thembekile; and his daughter- and sons- in-law, Milisa and Rashid and Mihlali. He was also preceded in death by his beloved son, Lizo, whose passing was a profound loss to the family.
He is survived by his beloved siblings, Sibusisiwe, Bongani and Bongiwe, together with the extended family, relatives, friends and all those whose lives he touched.
His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him. As a husband, father, brother and family member, he was an integral part of his family's history, a source of treasured memories and an enduring thread in the fabric of their lives.
To his wife and children, his siblings and the entire family, may the memories of his life, the love you shared and the enduring legacy of his contributions bring comfort in this time of immense sorrow.
Though he has departed from our midst, his life will continue to speak through the family he cherished, the people he inspired and the difference he made in the lives of others.
May his soul rest in eternal peace. Lala ngoxolo, Zikhali Mazembe, Jojo, Tiyeka. Your life mattered. Your contribution will not be forgotten.
